Directions for Using CWS Curriculum

Welcome to CrossWired Science! We are happy to take you on a thrilling journey to learn about God’s handiwork as we study God’s Creation together. Our prayer is that you will come to know the power, love intelligence and beauty of the Lord more than you ever thought possible through the things you learn in this course!

Please read all this before beginning. The first part will help you to know how to sign up your students. The second, very important part, will help you know how to use the program. #1 “CrossWired Science Core” is for students in elementary and middle school. #2 “Biology/Chemistry/Physics” is for High Schoolers. #3 “Supplement” is for those using CWS to supplement another curriculum.

4. Once logged in, student(s) can access their assigned curriculum from either the My Curriculum (dropdown menu) or their Student Dashboard.

To access CrossWired Science, you must have a standard CORE subscription.
Enroll your students as described above.

How to Begin

• Log in. From the “My Curriculum” tab at the top of the page, choose “CWS- Core 1 – First Timers“. This will take you to the GLOBAL TOPICS PAGE. Choose any one of the 4 Global Topics for Core 1: Fluid Dynamics, Sound, Electrons/Electricity or Acids/Bases.  (The Core 1 Student Modules are accessed in all 4 places and are the same.) Download and print each of the 24 Modules.

•The printed copy of the Module is for students to fill in day-by-day. The
digital copy of the Module is to be used by students daily as they
access the hyperlinked (blue text), step-by-step instructions. The Student Modules are your guides to using CWS effectively. You cannot do the CWS program as Core curriculum without the Modules.

•Complete the handwritten portions of the lessons on the pages you have printed. Store completed modules in three-ring binder for easy access. (See Printing below for helpful suggestions with printing.)

Guides

Log in. Download the Beginners Guide for teaching pre-K to fourth graders. This will greatly help you know how to use CrossWired
Science for younger age students.

Should you print Student Modules? You can save money and use the CWS Modules electronically for daily lesson instruction and simply use a regular notebook to record your student’s work. You can also just print in black and white. You can also use an editing tool to type in these electronically. If you print them in color, we highly recommend the Epson Ecotank Color Printer 3760 SE (Costco/Sam’s Club/Amazon). Printing costs to print the first 12 modules for CWS in color is about $5 TOTAL. This printer is a homeschooler’s dream come true. The ink lasts forever and refills are VERY inexpensive.

CORE 2

Available From the “My Curriculum” tab at the top of the page.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Further essential directions are in the beginning of the Module. They are called “Quick Start”.

2. “Bio/Chem/Physics (BCP)” 8-12th Grades

To access Biology/Chemistry/Physics (BCP), you must have a standard
subscription PLUS a $25 subscription to BCP. You may purchase this at the
SHOP BCP.

To complete the BCP 101/102 program, download 24 modules in the
Biology/Chemistry/Physics program by clicking the tab in the top menu bar
called “My Curriculum” and choosing BCP – 101 (Modules 1-12) or BCP 102- (Modules 13-24).

BCP – 101. This is the first semester consisting of 12 Modules. The
printable student assignments are found in each module under the
“Syllabus” icon. Each module may also contain icons for “Power Topics” and
“Supplemental Materials” (note: not all modules contain all sections) Print
each one as you go and keep a copy on your computer to access the
internet links for each section. The printed copy and digital copy need to both be accessible to students. Each module is entirely hyperlinked with step-by-
step sections. Look for words in blue colors; these are the hyperlinks.

BCP –  102 is the second semester of 12 Modules.

Students will complete the sections on the pages you have printed.
Keep each section organized in a separate tab in a three-ring binder for easy
access.

Print Student Modules? You can save money and use the CWS
Printables electronically for daily lesson instruction and simply use a regular notebook to record your student’s work. You can also just print in black and
white. You can also use an editing tool to type in these electronically. If you

3760 SE (Costco/Sam’s club). Printing costs to print the first 12 modules for

included on the Lesson Pages!

(To access Lesson Pages, go to top menu bar, select My Curriculum. Next
select CWS-Core 1 -First Timers. You can see the 4 Global Topics there: (Fluid Dynamics,
Sound, Electricity and Acids and Bases). Select which one you desire.
CWS- Core 2 – First Timers Global Topics are: Eye, Heat & Cold, Insulation, & Bioluminescence.

The Student Modules are filled with exciting
activities and experiments. Download one to your computer and look at the
Concept Pictures, Gerneal Links, Unit Links, Devotions, Crafts, Scientists,

ADDITIONAL HELPS

A mom wrote a few things on our Facebook group, CrossWired Science
Community that we wanted to pass onto you.

1. PROBLEMS LOGGING IN?
I can honestly say I’ve never had a problem logging in, but you can only have one account logged into a browser at a time. If you close the browser window, it logs you out, so you have to get used to minimizing the browser if you’re clicking around from the links in the printable.

Each student should have their own email, coupled with their own
password, set up to their own account.

2. YOU HAVE TO STAY LOGGED IN:
Ya gotta be logged in. If you’ve closed your browser window, you’re no longer logged in. One easy way to avoid this is to login and minimize your
browser, then click on links in the printables, which will bring up your browser
and go to that link in a *new* tab next to the the one you used to log in. That
way you can wander around in that tab and close it when done, without
logging out entirely.

3. GENERAL AND UNIT LINKS?
Some things (like the General Links (urls) are only clickable from the teacher portal. So, to access those, you have to be logged in to the teacher portal (the printable tells you this, but it’s counter intuitive).
However, the same links are *there* on the student portal, the kids just have
to cut and paste them into a new tab in the browser. My kid knew how to cut
and paste a URL by the time she was 5. Ya can’t be logged into the student
portal and the teacher portal at the same time in the same browser. You
*can* be logged into the teacher portal in IE and the student portal in
Chrome or whatever. CWS NOTE: We realize this is clunky. We are just trying to put up a little
firewall that will help protect kids from the negatives of the internet.

4. HOW DO BONES AND FLUID DYNAMICS FIT TOGETHER?
CWS NOTE: We teach more than one subject at a a time. This is why we
use Links. One of the great breakdowns in conventional science is that
subjects are covered then not covered again. Very little remains for life-time
memory that points to the Lord.
In CWS, we become the memory jogger and the ones adding to previously
learned concepts. In CrossWired Science, many parents have jumped into
the learning process themselves, then the entire family learns together.
There is nothing significant that we don’t come back to often and deepen.

The multi-subject approach is core to CWS and profoundly affects the life-
time memory of deep science that glorifies the Lord,.

5. THE CALENDARS ON THE WEBSITE?
CWS NOTE: These are NOT for those using the curriculum for full time
curriculum. Some use the website to supplement another curriculum. The
calendars are for them

6. THE WORKSHEETS THAT GO WITH THE “CORE” VIDEOS (on the pages with the videos once you pick one and click on it)
CWS NOTE: The worksheets are very short and very easy. They are not
necessary. We put them where they are in case you decide to use them, but
if you follow the Printable, they are not necessary. The worksheets on the
Gold Digs, however, can be helpful.
